Treatment Recommend bathing the eye with clean water 3 times a day DO NOT PRESCRIBE ANTYIBIOTICS ALLERGIC CONJUNCTIVITIES Clinical features Bright red inflammation of the white of the eyeball, outside the corned and inside the eyelids. The eyes are weepy and irritated. Occasional sneezing AVOID GIVING DRUGS INCLUDING ANTIBIOTICS AND STEROIDS Assess the cause of the allergy from details received from the parent. Recommend that the patient avoid contact with the suspective allergen. Rinse eyes with SALINE WATER and apply compresses. Purulent Conjunctivitis Clinical features Bright red inflammation of the which of the eyeball, outside the cornea and inside the eyelid. Purulent discharge. Swelling of the conjunctiva and the eyelids. Treatment Recommend frequent bathing of the eyes with cleater 4 times a day. Apply TETRACYLINE Eye Ointment or CHLORAMPHENICOL Eye Drops after bathing the eye 6 times day for 3 days. If conditions persist, apply GENTAMICIN DROPS. Ophthalmia neonatorum Clinical features An aliment associated with newborn babies. Pussy discharge Swelling of the lids. Treatment Bathe the eye with cooled, boiled water Apply CHLORAMPHENICOL Eye Drops or TETRACYCLINE 1% Eye Ointment. Apply initially every 5 minutes for half an hour Then every 30 minutes for 24 hours. Thereafter every 4 hours for 3 to 5 days. If symptoms persist, apply GENTAMICIN Drops Prescribe PROCAINE PENICILIN FORTIFIED 0.2 MU (2ml) daily for 3 days Examine the patient daily If symptoms persist more than 3 days, REFER patient immediately to an eye specialist. Prevention Clean the eyes of all newborns immediately after delivery. Apply TETRACYCLINE Eye Ointment or CHLORAMPHENICOL. Eye Drops. |
